Educators Explore Called2Change

June 08, 2011
Forty-five teachers, counselors, administrators and violence prevention educators from across the state participated in the Memorial’s annual Education Summit today. Focusing this year on Called2Change, the Summit provided participants with the opportunity to learn about this Memorial program designed to improve school climate and encourage students to make good choices and discover the importance of respect, resilience and responsibility.
Executive Director Kari Watkins discussed the relationship between remembrance and education in the Memorial’s mission, and the relevance of the lessons learned from the Murrah Building bombing. Survivor Amy Petty and family member Rev. Wendy Lambert shared their personal experiences and answered questions. Dr. Robin Gurwitch, well-known expert on dealing with children in crisis and bereavement, provided Steps to Build Resilience in Children via Skype from Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center.
Director of Education & Research Lynne Roller and Education Coordinator Lynne Porter led Called2Change activities and facilitated an exploration of the student Museum experience and creation of a student guide. Participants received professional development, and licensed counselors received continuing education credit.
The Education Summit was made possible through the generous support of Devon Energy Corporation.
