Preserving History...Museum Artifacts Tell a Story

July 04, 2011

The first American flag removed from the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building on April 19, 1995, was displayed atop the crane used in the rescue and recovery efforts. It was later presented to the State of Oklahoma by staff of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms, who initially recovered it from the building. The flag is currently exhibited in Chapter 6 of the Museum.

The Oklahoma City National Memorial & Museum is the official repository for all artifacts and documents related to the bombing and its aftermath. This flag is among the thousands of artifacts and documents transferred to the Memorial for preservation and safekeeping. Using these artifacts, documents, photos and personal stories, the Museum tells the remarkable story of what happened, how people responded, and what we learned.
