Preserving History...Museum Artifacts Tell a Story

July 11, 2011
A sense of patriotism and support for our country and our flag were prevalent in the response to the 1995 bombing of the Murrah Building. Among the many quilts created as symbols of hope and comfort was a patriotic block quilt (58" x 48"), sent to Governor Frank Keating’s office from Jefferson Middle School in Oklahoma City. Beneath the students’ artwork and handwritten Preamble to the Constitution on the back of the quilt, is this message: “To Mr. & Mrs. Keating,” and “Jefferson Middle School, 1995, Thank you for your strong leadership & loving concern in our time of need. We love you! Civics 7th grade Students & S. Hawkins.”
The Oklahoma City National Memorial & Museum is the official repository for all artifacts and documents related to the bombing and its aftermath. The quilt is among thousands of artifacts and documents transferred to the Memorial for preservation and safekeeping. Using these artifacts, documents, photos and personal stories, the Museum tells the remarkable story of what happened, how people responded, and what we learned.
