Preserving History...Museum Artifacts Tell a Story

July 18, 2011

The Memorial’s collections contain many artifacts and stories that show the physical force generated by the bomb that destroyed the Murrah Building on April 19, 1995.

This steel fire escape door was located on the 4th floor, south side of the Journal Record Building, facing the north side of the Murrah Building. When the bomb blast occurred at 9:02 a.m., the door was blown off its hinges. As first responders arrived looking for survivors, they used the door as a barricade to block the fire exit, because he exterior stairs beyond it were gone. The door is on exhibit in Chapter 4a of the Museum.

The Oklahoma City National Memorial & Museum is the official repository for all artifacts and documents related to the bombing and its aftermath. The door is among thousands of artifacts and documents transferred to the Memorial for preservation and safekeeping. Using these artifacts, documents, photos and personal stories, the Museum tells the remarkable story of what happened, how people responded, and what we learned. Visit the Museum and remember those who were killed, those who survived and those changed forever.
