Preserving History...Museum Artifacts Tell a Story

August 01, 2011
These melted fragments of 50 gallon barrels, currently exhibited in the Museum, were collected by FBI agents in the rubble near the Murrah Building after the bombing. When the FBI searched Terry Nichols’ home in Herington, Kansas, on the Saturday following the bombing, they found these 50 gallon plastic barrels. Hundreds of pieces of evidence were collected that linked Terry Nichols to building the bomb that killed 168 people on April 19, 1995.
Thousands of pieces of evidence were collected in the OK BOMB investigation and used in the subsequent trials and convictions of Timothy McVeigh and Terry Nichols. After the trials were completed these evidentiary items were transferred by the FBI to the Museum Archives.
The Oklahoma City National Memorial & Museum is the official repository for all artifacts and documents related to the bombing and its aftermath. These exhibits are among thousands of artifacts and documents transferred to the Memorial for preservation and safekeeping. Using these artifacts, documents, photos and personal stories, the Museum tells the remarkable story of what happened, how people responded, what we learned and how justice was served.
