Preserving History...Museum Artifacts Tell a Story

November 07, 2011
The General Services Administration, the government agency in charge of all federal buildings, started the Art in Architecture Program in 1972. “America has evolved culturally to the point of having an aesthetic vision out of the museum and into people’s daily lives – into their government buildings,” said GSA Administrator Jay Solomon. When the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building opened in 1976, GSA selected and purchased 32 works of art to be displayed in the public areas of the building. Twenty-three of these pieces survived the bombing. This wood and copper sculpture, Night Rider, by Oklahoman Charles Pratt, is one of four pieces currently on exhibit in the Museum.
