Preserving History...Museum Artifacts Tell a Story

November 14, 2011
After the bombing on April 19, 1995, a large chain-link fence was installed to protect the Murrah Building crime scene. Those who came to the site left tribute items on the Fence. On October 26, 1998, family members, survivors and rescue workers moved more than two hundred feet of the fence to its present location next to the 9:03 Gate, the healing side of the Outdoor Symbolic Memorial.
This remarkable veteran’s ball cap was recently removed from the Fence for preservation into the Museum’s collections. The hat is embroidered with 1st Bn 26th Marines Delta Company Vietnam. Several service pins decorate the crown: Republic of Vietnam Service, Bronze Star, Purple Heart, Khe Sanh (Combat Base) and a Sergeant Major insignia. The owner of the hat signed his name in pen on the crown, “Sg. Maj. Norman Kidd, 2010.”
The Memorial Fence has become one of the favorite destinations for those visiting the Memorial and visitors continue to leave mementos.
