Memorial Moves Birds On To Protect Assets

July 12, 2012

Memorial staff is coordinating Mark Bays from the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), Food, & Forestry and Kevin Grant, Oklahoma Wildlife Services State Director, to protect the Outdoor Symbolic Memorial from a massive influx of birds. Three species of birds are staying overnight in the loblolly pines that frame the Field of Empty Chairs. Staffers use lights, and clap boards to drive the birds away.

"We are not doing anything to harm the birds and we are simply try to protect the Memorial’s assets and the sanctity of the site," Kari Watkins, Executive Director of the Memorial said. "We clearly are going by the laws that are in place and have the appropriate people involved to guide our plan to move these birds on to their next location."
