New Video Aquisition Provides Glimpse into Crucial Traffic Stop

December 27, 2008

The Oklahoma City National Memorial Archives received the April 19, 1995, dashcam recording of former Oklahoma Highway Patrol Trooper and current Noble County (Okla.) Sheriff Charlie Hanger as part of a large amount of evidentiary materials transfered from the Federal Bureau of Investigation to the Memorial, which is the official repository for items related to the bombing. This recording shows the extraordinary act of someone going about his ordinary job, and how what was a routine stop of a car without a license plate helped capture one of the perpetrators of the Oklahoma City bombing. The investigation into the bombing was still ongoing when the Memorial Museum was being developed. After the trials of the perpetrators of this terrorist act, the FBI began releasing items pertaining to the investigation and evidence used in the trials to the Memorial, As items are released, the Memorial has the opportunity to help visitors and researchers alike better understand the magnitude of the investigation that brought justice in the one of the largest acts of domestic terrorism on American soil.

“We have story after story of first responders, rescue workers, law enforcement and others who did their job the way they do it every day, and who, in doing so, brought justice to those affected by the bombing,” said Kari Watkins, Oklahoma City National Memorial & Museum executive director. “It is important that we continue to collect the interviews, artifacts and stories that make up the largest investigation in United States history.”

In addition to receiving items from the FBI, Memorial staff has also recently traveled to Perry, Oklahoma, site of the Noble County Jail, where Timothy McVeigh was being held on weapons charges after his arrest. The jail was  closed after a new one was built, and historical interviews, images and video were taken from jail staff and the Noble County judge. Another trip to Herington, Kansas, also resulted in collection of items and interviews from people who witnessed this piece of history.
