Interagency Security Committee Tours Memorial and Museum

April 02, 2009

Members of the Interagency Security Committee (ISC) working group toured the Memorial and Museum today at the end of their five city tour. The ISC was created after the Oklahoma City bombing to serve as a collaborative body focused on improving physical security and protection of Federal civilian facilities. President Clinton created this agency by Executive Order in 1995 following the attack on the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building.

This group developed the initial Vulnerability Assessment of Federal Facilities within 60 days of the bombing and a copy is on display in the Museum. It is this report that changed the standards required for all Federal buildings. Since 1995, many engineering improvements have been put in place at Federal facilities, such as shatter-resistant windows and protective glass films. Today, all new Federal buildings must be constructed with truck-resistant barriers and deep setbacks from the street.

"The impact of the Oklahoma City bombing is long-lasting and unforgettable. This tragedy is a constant reminder – a source of determination – for all Interagency Security Committee members – to ensure that it never happens again," said Austin Smith, Executive Director.
