National Volunteer Week

April 19, 2009
April 19-25 is National Volunteer Week. The Oklahoma City National Memorial salutes its corps of volunteers, without whom we could not operate!
Memorial volunteers share their favorite reasons for volunteering at the Memorial.
“My favorite thing about volunteering at the Memorial Museum is the appreciation the staff pours on every one of us. Never a day goes by that we aren't thanked over and over for our help.”

“Just Being able to meet and talk with people from everywhere.”
Jenny Craig

“I think my favorite thing is seeing who is going to come next. Neat and interesting people come here from all over, and I love hearing about what brought them to the Memorial.”
Pam Ellis

“My initial reason for volunteering at the Oklahoma City National Memorial & Museum is to honor my brother and his fellow rescuers who bravely risked their lives in an effort to save the victims of the bombing. Through my volunteer work, I can relay not only the story of the incident that happened on April 19, 1995, but I can also represent and relay the story from one rescuer’s perspective.”

“My favorite part of volunteering for the Memorial is getting to meet people from all over the United States and the world and interacting with them. It is great to get their impressions of the Memorial and Museum. It’s just a wonderful opportunity to get to know people better.”

“I get to talk up here. At home, I don’t get to say much. No, really, I think it is such a good cause. Maybe it’ll keep someone from doing what McVeigh and Nichols did here.”
Ronny Greenberg
|
“I think my favorite thing is meeting the public. They are the finest people in the world who seek out this place to learn from it. It’s very special to get to meet and greet our visitors.”
Annetta McCoy

“The best part of volunteering here is meeting all the wonderful people from all different states and finding out how they came to be in Oklahoma. And, I get to honor those people who were hurt or killed and those who risked their lives to save them.”

“My favorite thing is meeting people from all over the place.”
Dave Dean

“My favorite thing about volunteering is being in archives. Each artifact or document or image tells a story, and to be able to capture those really important pieces that tell the complete story of this event so that generations can learn from it and from the people who were involved is a great feeling.”
Jo Wolf

“My favorite thing is the people. Everybody is so kind and so gracious. This facility is such a blessing to the city.”
Carolyn Merritt

“The best part for me is getting to meet all the people from all over the country and sharing their experiences.” Gayle Brown

“The reasons I volunteer at the Oklahoma City National Memorial are many. I am proud to be an Oklahoman by choice. The Memorial is a very important part of our history. As such, I try to impart that history to visitors from all over the world to help them to better understand the impact of terrorism. Meeting people is very rewarding. I feel am doing something important and the Memorial staff are the greatest friendly people. God bless!”

“I just have a wonderful time here. The staff and my fellow volunteers are such incredible people, and I know I am supporting the work of the Memorial by donating my time. I love it.”

I enjoy meeting people from all over the world and telling the story. This story is so important. I’ve even had some people tell me this should be a rite of passage as Americans, especially as Oklahomans.”
Marguerite Christman

“I have so many connections to this event – I knew 60 people who were killed. I worked in the building and both my husband and I retired from the Murrah Building. It is something I just need to do.”
