Downtown Churches Gather at Memorial for National Day of Prayer Service

May 07, 2009

Members of downtown Oklahoma City churches hosted a service marking the National Day of Prayer at the Oklahoma City National Memorial’s Survivor Tree on Thursday, May 7, at 5:15 p.m. This event provided a unique opportunity for the downtown community to participate in the National Day of Prayer. Noted Oklahoma City Contemporary Christian recording artist Jami Smith opened the event with a short concert at 5:00 p.m.

“This is a perfect place for all of us to come together and pray for our city, our churches and our government,” said Rev. Mark McAdow, event organizer and Senior Pastor at First Church. “The Survivor Tree is a very special place in our city. It shapes the nature of our prayer time together. We hope many in our city will come to join with us in this service of unity and faith.”

The National Day of Prayer united millions in prayer as thousands of events took place from coast to coast. The theme for this year was "Prayer... America's Hope" and is based on the verse from Psalm 33:22 which states, "May your unfailing love rest upon us, O Lord, even as we put our hope in you." This year’s National Honorary Chair is noted writer and speaker Beth Moore.

Host churches for the downtown Oklahoma City event include First United Methodist Church, First Baptist Church of Oklahoma City, First Lutheran Church, St. Joseph’s Old Cathedral and St. Paul’s Episcopal Church.
