Memorial and Red Cross Partner with Other Groups to Better Prepare Communities

September 08, 2009
More than 100 people from the NAACP, the Oklahoma Chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-OK) and the Latino Community Development (LCDA) gathered at the Memorial Museum on Saturday during an American Red Cross Community Disaster Response Training course targeting diversity leaders.
“These volunteer partnerships mean we will continue to have a diverse base of volunteers, trained to work side-by-side with their neighbors when needed most,” said Vince Hernandez, CEO of the America Red Cross of Central Oklahoma.
Leadership from these organizations plan on taking what was learned from the day’s courses, working with their local Red Cross chapters and preparing even more Oklahomans in their constituent base.
“We were honored to host this amazing day of training and topped it off by a tour of the Memorial and Museum,” said Kari Watkins, Executive Director, Oklahoma City National Memorial & Museum. “They showed great leadership in securing the knowledge to be prepared and could understand the impact of a community working together by seeing the sights and sounds of the bombing. This moment in history is when Oklahomans became known around the world for their incredible response. We want to prepare this next generation of Oklahomans to be able to respond in the same fashion.”
