Memorial Marathon Helps Start Eco-Friendly Travel Initiative Pilot Program

September 28, 2009

The Oklahoma City Memorial Marathon is one of seven Oklahoma tourism sectors announced today as a pilot ECO program. The Oklahoma Department of Tourism and Recreation, in partnership with the Oklahoma Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ), has developed the new travel initiative called ECO – Encouraging Conservation in Oklahoma. The ECO program emphasizes conservation, preservation and innovation, all qualities that embody Oklahoma and Oklahomans. The Oklahoma City Memorial Marathon will have the resources and knowledge of the Tourism Department and DEQ as we proceed through the pilot project year leading to the 10th running of the Marathon. A customized plan will be developed for the Marathon and used as a step-by-step guide in our journey towards sustainability.

ECO will assist the Marathon in reducing the environmental impact of the 23,000 anticipated runners plus their friends, families and Marathon volunteers on April 25, 2010.
