McLoud Students Partner with the Memorial to
Stop Violence and Bullying

September 30, 2009

Memorial Video Director Tony Stizza and Education Coordinator Lynne Porter, traveled to McLoud, OK, to videotape students working on a project geared toward stopping violence and bullying. Developed by John Martin, who teaches gifted and talented students at McLoud Intermediate School, the project is designed for kindergarten through fourth grade students and focuses on identifying a bully, areas in school where bullying takes place, what causes a person to become a bully, and how to respond.

The students have had speakers, completed extensive research on the internet and used personal experiences to understand bullying. After each component is finished, they compare their findings to Timothy McVeigh and discuss how someone could commit such a senseless act of violence. The students will complete the project by creating a “Bully Book.” Included in the book are illustrated narratives with multiple choice responses accompanied by reinforcement to support the correct choice. The book will be shared with Memorial staff when the students come to tour the Memorial and Museum on November 11.
