Field of Empty Chairs Rewiring Enters Final Stage

October 26, 2009

The final step in a two month process of rewiring of the Field of Empty Chairs started today by resetting each of the 168 chairs. Each chair has been rewired and today the designer of the chairs, Chris Vespermann, joined the Memorial’s Facilities and Construction staff in beginning the final placement of the chairs.

Each of the chairs has been now been rewired and the new inner-working parts of the chairs have been manufactured by KIMRAY, Inc., an Oklahoma City based company that machines and specializes in iron, steel and aluminum products. The local company produced the parts as their annual gift to the Memorial. "This gift in excess of $10,000 is something that will last for years," said Kari Watkins, Executive Director of the Oklahoma City National Memorial & Museum. "Their generosity has allowed us to do this project ahead of schedule and within our budget. In these tough economic times, we are very grateful to them for stepping up to help us maintain this site at the standard we all expect."

The resetting of the chairs should take about two weeks and the total project should be wrapped up by mid-November.
