Memorial Represented at
2009 Oklahoma Council for Indian Education Conference

December 09, 2009

Education Coordinator Lynne Porter participated as both exhibitor and presenter at the 2009 Oklahoma Council for Indian Education Annual Conference at the Reed Conference Center in the Sheraton Midwest City Hotel on December 8-9. The guiding principles of the Oklahoma Council for Indian Education are to "promote Indian education at all levels of learning; expand cultural awareness; and to collaborate with other organizations to the benefit of Indian students within the state of Oklahoma." Porter presented a workshop on Called2Change, the Memorial's premier violence prevention program. Workshop participants experienced the Hope Trunk and a First Person presentation by Oklahoma City Fire Department Lt. Chris Thompson, who responded from Station 8 on April 19, 1995. Porter explained these and other components of this successful program about respect, resilience and responsibility, and encouraging students to make wise choices.
