Tile Painter Returns to Memorial

December 22, 2009
When she was five years old and in kindergarten at Harrah, Oklahoma, Courtney Manwell painted her handprint on a tile that was chosen by Memorial designers to frame the Children's Area located in front of the entrance to the Memorial Museum. She visited the Memorial today with her grandmother, Rosalie Manwell, a member of the World Organization of China Painters. Rosalie assisted Courtney’s class in painting the tiles and then firing them. As one of the many responses of hope and healing, hundreds of tiles like Courtney's were sent by this organization to the Oklahoma City Arts Council in 1995, and then given to the Oklahoma City National Memorial & Museum.
