Stuffed Animals from the Fence Provide
Comfort for Children in Ohio

January 06, 2010
Social studies teacher Andrew Smith and language arts teachers at Sheffield Middle School in Sheffield, Ohio, are beginning their third year of an outreach service project that began in conjunction with their study of the 1995 bombing of the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building. Using stuffed animals left on the fence, students create stories of hope and comfort for children. Each student selects an animal to be the focus of his story, which is illustrated and made into a book.
"Last year was our second year of the project and our students collectively created over 170 stories," said Smith. "These stories, accompanied with their animals, were publicly presented to the protective caseworkers at Lorain County Children Services. The animals and stories made their way into the lives of foster children throughout the Cleveland, Ohio, area. The appreciation and thanks were overwhelming!"
