USAR Team Collections Add to Memorial Story

January 14, 2010

Arizona Task Force 1 is one of eleven Urban Search and Rescue Teams (USAR) that assisted the Oklahoma City Fire Department in the rescue and recovery following the April 19, 1995, bombing of the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building. USAR Team collections are important to researchers who use the Memorial Archives to study the various aspects of rescue and recovery efforts in response to terrorist attacks or natural disasters. USAR task force members work in four areas of specialization: search, to find victims trapped after a disaster; rescue, which includes safely digging victims out of tons of collapsed concrete and metal; technical, made up of structural specialists who make rescues safe for the rescuers; and medical, which cares for the victims before and after a rescue. This AZ-TF1 helmet signed by the team was given to Norman Police Officer Jerry Spearman, who then presented it to the Oklahoma City National Memorial & Museum in respect and remembrance of AZ-TF1's response to the bombing.
