Memorial Hosts State Superintendent's Student Advisory Council

February 11, 2010
Members of State Superintendent Sandy Garrett’s Student Advisory Council met at the Oklahoma City National Memorial & Museum on February 10 to learn about the impact of violence and terrorism, community response, justice and the memorialization process resulting from the 1995 bombing of the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building.
Following remarks by Memorial Executive Director Kari Watkins, a tour of the Museum and First Person speakers Barry Black, FBI Special Agent Bomb Technician and survivor Amy Petty, students shared their impressions with Superintendent Garrett. Students also discussed and made recommendations on using social media to engage young people in dialogue about the event and its relevance to their lives and the world in which they live.
The Council, comprised of 50 high school students from across the state who are selected on a competitive basis, provides input to the State Superintendent on key issues affecting school performance and reform.
