Preserving History ... Gavel Added to Wall of Justice

March 16, 2010
The recent gift of a historical artifact by Oklahoma Supreme Court Vice Chief Justice Steven W. Taylor has provided an opportunity to enhance the investigation story told in the Museum. Taylor, who was the Oklahoma district judge selected to preside over the state trial of Terry Nichols in spring 2004, has given the Museum the gavel he used during the trial. Carved from two hickory branches by a boyhood friend of Taylor’s father, the gavel was given to him at his father’s graveside service not long after Taylor was appointed to the trial bench in 1984. Archives staff installed the gavel in an exhibit case in the Wall of Justice area of the Museum.
