HB 2750 Passes the Senate Education Committee
Bill Now Headed to Senate Floor

March 22, 2010

The Senate Education Committee passed HB 2750 out of committee today by a vote of 14-0. This bill mandates the State Board of Education to incorporate teaching the story of the April 19, 1995, bombing of the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building, and the lessons learned from this event and the role it played in the history of Oklahoma and the nation.

Senator John Ford chaired the committee at the Oklahoma State Capitol. Senator Ron Justice authored the bill in the Senate, and Representative Lee Denney authored the bill that passed out of the House of Representatives earlier this month.

"This bill allows us to put emphasis on teaching the lessons learned, and allows the State Department and the Memorial to work together to ensure it is taught," said Senator Clark Jolley, Vice Chair of the Education Committee.

Senator Justice agreed and reminded fellow Senators, "This bill provides us the opportunity as legislators to ensure these lessons are top of mind for many years to come."

An excerpt from HB 2750 as passed reads

...A study of the bombing and its aftermath can help students learn the impact of violence, the senseless to solve problems or effect government change and the importance of personal responsibility. The State Department of Education may make program materials and resources concerning the April 19, 1995, bombing of the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building in Oklahoma City provided by the Oklahoma City National Memorial & Museum available to public schools of this state…

The bill is now expected to be voted on by the full Senate sometime next week.
