Researchers Use Archives to Study Collections

May 03, 2010
Researchers from all over the United States travel to the Museum's Archives to study the numerous collections related to the events of April 19, 1995, and its aftermath. University of Illinois doctoral candidate Martin Holland is spending four weeks in the Archives studying the Memorial's 624 design competition boards and materials documenting the memorial process. According to Holland, "By investigating the content of the unpublished architectural competition boards, a wider theoretical position is established that reveals how designers consider representations of tragedy. Examining the design boards highlights the position architects and landscape architects find themselves in when trying to navigate the needs of a community dealing with trauma, loss and grief and the necessities of a city looking to rebuild."
