Memorial Curator Joins Other Leaders To Discuss Sensitive Collections At World Conference

May 24, 2010
Helen Stiefmiller, Collections Manager from the Oklahoma City National Memorial & Museum, joined museum professionals from the National September 11 Memorial & Museum, the Henley Company, the Museum of Tolerance and the Sixth Floor Museum at Dealey Plaza to discuss Working with Emotionally Sensitive Collections. The session addressed issues surrounding Memorial Museums, including collection materials, exhibitions, and effects on staff, donors, survivors and visitors impacted by these historical events. Stiefmiller’s presentation showed how to remain sensitive while producing historical exhibits.
This session is a part of a weeklong convention of the American Association of Museums, where museum professionals across the United States and 50 countries are meeting in Los Angeles to learn, share and connect with colleagues. AAM’s Museum without Borders explores connections between cultures from around the world and in our own backyards.
There are some 17,500 museums in the United States, institutions that preserve and interpret America’s great creative, natural and historic heritages. Of those, only some 775 are accredited by the American Association of Museums, the highest recognition that a museum can achieve in the United States. The Oklahoma City National Memorial Museum is one those 775. Ford Bell, the President and CEO of AAM, visited the Oklahoma City National Memorial & Museum recently and offered some insight into the importance of this Museum.
