Preserving History...
Fence Items Shared for Remembrance

July 12, 2010

Mementos left on the Fence by visitors from all over the world are periodically removed and cataloged for the Museum collection or are incorporated into the Memorial's traveling educational program known as the Hope Trunk. Items collected include t-shirts, teddy bears, license tags, key chains, jewelry, first responder patches, hats and toys.

This firefighter's helmet left on the Fence is from the Wauseon, Ohio, Fire Department. It is inscribed with "#22 Larkin" and "#933 Davis." First responders often leave hats, t-shirts, badges, pins and parts of uniforms to honor those who were killed, those who survived, and first responders who worked the rescue and recovery.
