Preserving History...
Sailors Create Memorial Tribute from Historic Ship

July 19, 2010

One of the categories of artifacts that the Memorial and Museum collects is the reactions of people from around the world to the bombing of the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building. A prized artifact is a beautiful bench constructed in the aftermath of the bombing using wood from the historic Navy flagship USS Constitution. The USS Constitution, the oldest commissioned ship in the U.S. Navy, had undergone an overhaul in 1994. The salvaged wood was flown from Boston to Oklahoma in November 1995, and five sailors, Lt. Karl Storm, Chief Usher, Chief Peeples, AT1 David Croft, and AE1 Pearse, stationed at Tinker Air Force Base spent more than 700 hours hand-crafting the bench. The team dedicated it to the "steadfast spirit of Oklahoma in memory of each life forever changed."
