First Person: Stories of Hope
Features Bob Johnson and Karen Luke

July 23, 2010

Join us this summer for a First Person: Stories of Hope program. Family members, survivors, first responders, journalists, and people involved with rebuilding our city and creating the Memorial will share the remarkable stories of their experiences from April 19, 1995, to the present. Museum visitors can ask questions and learn firsthand how tragedy was transformed into hope. First Person is offered in the Museum on Fridays at 1:30 p.m. from June 4th to August 27th, or for groups by appointment. The program is included free with Museum admission.

Bob Johnson and Karen Luke

Founding Chair and Vice Chair
Oklahoma City National Memorial Foundation

In the aftermath of April 19, 1995, Mayor Ron Norick appointed Bob Johnson to chair the 350 member Memorial Task Force charged with developing an appropriate memorial to honor those touched by the bombing, and Karen Luke to serve as Vice Chair. Together they led an intensive, deliberate and inclusive process over the next five years that resulted in the Oklahoma City National Memorial & Museum.

From creating the mission statement and a survivor definition, to conducting an international design competition, to deciding about a street closure to raising funds and hosting Presidents of the United States, their servant leadership and determination to find consensus resulted in an Outdoor Symbolic Memorial dedicated on April 19, 2000, the fifth anniversary of the bombing, followed by the Museum dedication on February 19, 2001. Oklahoma City’s memorialization process is a remarkable example of what happens when a community works together to turn tragedy into hope.
