Preserving History...
Handmade Rug Left at Fence Honors Oklahoma National Guard

August 02, 2010

Archives staff and volunteers periodically spend a day cleaning and collecting items from the Fence. The mementos left by visitors from all over the world are periodically removed and cataloged for the Museum collection or are incorporated into the Memorial’s traveling educational resource, the Hope Trunk. Items collected include t-shirts, teddy bears, license tags, key chains, jewelry, first responder patches, hats and toys.

This handmade Persian rug depicts Baku, Azerbaijan, one of the stops on the historic Silk Road. It was placed on the Memorial’s Fence in 2004 by Azerbaijan’s Minister of Defense Colonel General Safan Abiyev, in honor of Oklahoma’s and the Oklahoma National Guard’s involvement with Azerbaijan in the Partnership for Peace Program. The rug is now a part of the Memorial’s permanent collection.
