Unclaimed Personal Possessions Enhance Museum Collections

August 09, 2010

After the bombing, unclaimed personal possessions removed from the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building and the automobiles parked in the lot north of the building were placed in a warehouse in Oklahoma City to be viewed by family members and survivors. Items not claimed were stored for five years by the Memorial and then added to the collections. Good faith efforts, including notices sent through Memorial newsletters, were made to assist people in reclaiming their possessions before these items were taken into the collections. Shortly before the move from the warehouse in 2000, a release form for these items was sent to all family members and survivors. At that point, these possessions were evaluated and those considered valuable for future exhibits were boxed and moved.

This unclaimed Polaroid camera is one of the hundreds of things removed from the Murrah Building after the bombing. The agency and owner of camera is unknown, but this type of camera was used by staff at the Deparment of Housing and Urban Development, the Drug Enforcement Agency, Social Security, and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms.
