Preserving History...
Internet Quilt Project Unique in 1995

October 18, 2010

Shortly after the bombing, a proposal was posted on the Internet asking crafters to participate in a memorial quilt project for those who were killed in the Murrah Building bombing. This project allowed people from all over the United States, Australia, New Zealand and Canada to share in the grieving process. Coordinating via the Internet, crafters produced 208 different counted cross-stitch designs, many of which are copyrighted, and 38 individual quilt blocks that eventually became the quilt. Organizers gathered the blocks together at several locations for assembly and completed the entire process in only three months. In July 1995, the quilt was presented it the City of Oklahoma City in a City Council meeting. The unique thing about this project and the level of participation is that in 1995, 16 million people, 4% of the world’s population, were Internet users, compared with 1,971 million users, 28.8% of the world’s population, today.

This global Internet Memorial Quilt was later transferred to the Museum to be preserved.
