Oklahoma City and Los Angeles Students
Have Book Discussion Via Video Conference

November 09, 2010
Fourth grade students from Stonegate Elementary in Oklahoma City connected with fourth graders from two Los Angeles elementary schools and writer Vaunda Micheaux Nelson via video conference in the Center for Education & Outreach at the Oklahoma City National Memorial & Museum. Los Angeles students were hosted by the Museum of Tolerance. Nelson is the author of Bad News for Outlaws, The Remarkable Life of Bass Reeves, Deputy U. S. Marshal, chosen for the Once Upon a World Children’s Book Award, presented annually by the Museum of Tolerance. Students from each school gave brief presentations, followed by a question and answer session with the author. Teachers Sanford Jackson and Brenda Senner and Dr. Rochelle Converse, principal, worked with students to prepare for the discussion about Bass Reeves, who captured more than 3,000 outlaws in Indian Territory. Reeves’ devotion to duty was legendary, and he often used disguises so he could capture outlaws without using violence.
