Preserving History...
Handmade Sleigh on Exhibit in Museum Lobby

December 13, 2010

One of the areas of focus that Museum staff collects is the reactions of the community, the country and the world to the April 19, 1995, bombing of the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building. Artifacts in the Museum’s collections include quilts, paintings, sculpture, drawings, plaques, poetry, music, cards and letters sent to Oklahoma and Oklahoma City via Mayor Norick’s office, Governor Keating’s office, hospitals, schools, fire stations, survivors and families of those who were killed.

This handmade wooden sleigh was sent from Cape Canaveral, Florida, to Oklahoma City Mayor Ron Norick’s office for the first Christmas after the bombing of the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building. The City filled it with poinsettias and placed it in their office entry for the month of December 1995. It was then sent it to the Oklahoma City National Memorial for preservation. Visitors can now view this sleigh in the Museum Lobby during the December holiday season.
