Design Competition Boards Reflect Memorial Process

January 24, 2011
The Memorial Archives is the repository of artifacts and documentary materials related to the April 19th bombing of the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building and its aftermath. One of the Memorial’s important documentary and object collections records the memorial process.
The memorial process officially began when Oklahoma City Mayor Ron Norick assembled a 350-member Task Force to look for ways to appropriately commemorate April 19, 1995. Their Mission Statement reflected a plan to create a memorial “…to remember those who were killed, those who survived and those changed forever.”
Building from this cornerstone, the Oklahoma City National Memorial Foundation launched an international design competition to create the blueprints for the memorial. Chosen from 624 entries representing all 50 states and 23 countries, the final design was announced in July 1997. American designers Hans and Torrey Butzer and their German partner Sven Berg were all living and working in Germany at the time of the design competition.
The 624 design competition boards are preserved in the Memorial’s Archives. These photos represent a variety of the submissions, with the winning design on the right.
