Museum Builders...
Jeannine Gist

February 02, 2011
It takes a thousand people to tell a single story...
Ancient Native American proverb
Each day between now and February 19th, you will hear from one of the Museum builders. More than a decade ago, people throughout this community gathered to build the Memorial and Museum. This process was like none other. We sought the help of some of the best people from around the country that had done this before to help our community build this special place.
Jeannine Gist lost her daughter Karen Gist Carr in the bombing of the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building bombing on April 19, 1995. Jeannine could have done many things with her time, but she chose to give back and worked tirelessly to help develop the Oklahoma City National Memorial Museum. Listen to Jeannine as she recounts the responsibility she felt and the experience of putting the Museum together piece by piece.
Today, the family members of those who were killed, the survivors and the rescue workers still play a vital role in the oversight of the operations and serve on committees and as Trustees along with other people from the community. For the past decade, the Museum has been telling the story of the Oklahoma City bombing and the hope that came from the horror by fulfilling the Memorial Mission. It should include important facts and observations about the bombing and teaches visitors never to forget the event or the people it touched….it should be participatory and should instill an understanding of the senselessness of violence, especially as a means of effecting government change. It should convey the imperative to reject violence.
Make plans now to visit the Memorial Museum during the 10th Birthday celebration on Saturday, February 19th from 9:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m. Museum admission is free on this special day courtesy of Devon Energy.
