President and Mrs. George W. Bush

February 18, 2011
It takes a thousand voices to tell a single story...
Ancient Native American proverb
Ten years ago tomorrow (February 19th), the Memorial Museum was dedicated by President and Mrs. George W. Bush. It was their first official visit outside Washington, D.C., after being sworn in as the 43rd President of the United States. Each day leading up to the birthday celebration, we have focused on one of the Museum builders. President and Mrs. Bush came to Oklahoma City a few days after the bombing as the Governor and First Lady of Texas to participate in the Prayer Service at the Oklahoma City Fairgrounds. They have been partners in our progress and were here to help us commemorate the story as we dedicated the Memorial Museum a decade ago. Listen to the words of President Bush as this Museum was dedicated to the public.
While the Memorial and Museum stand on the site of a federal attack, it is owned today by a private foundation that built the Memorial, Museum and established the Archives. Today the Oklahoma City National Memorial Foundation owns and operates this facility and has a special partnership with the National Park Service to do the interpretation of the outdoor site.
On Saturday, admission to the Museum is free courtesy of Devon Energy. Join us for the celebration of the lives lost, the story told and the resilience of a city at 12:00 noon on Saturday. Platt College’s Pastry Arts Program, Borden Dairy ice cream and Dirty Water Coffee are providing the treats for the day. Congressman James Lankford and Oklahoma City Thunder mascot Rumble the bison will help serve cake and be a part of this special day. At 1:00 p.m., the Museum Builders, a committee of a dozen community leaders will reflect on how this Museum was built and why it is so important today.
