Museum Builders...
A Community Coming Together

February 19, 2011

It takes a thousand voices to tell a single story...
Ancient Native American proverb

The story of the Oklahoma City National Memorial & Museum is a story about our community and lessons learned that can be shared with the world. It is a lesson on resilience and it a symbol of our strength. It is story about the people of Oklahoma and around the world and how we came together when faced with the worst tragedy.

Just five years following the bombing of the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building, the Oklahoma City National Memorial had been built and was dedicated. It all started with a large task force of 350 people appointed to serve by Mayor Ron Norick. Following the opening of the Memorial, just ten months later, the Memorial Museum was dedicated. This was nothing short of a miracle. Two international and historic sites of distinction were open and people were coming from near and far to learn the story.

Today, the admisison to the Museum combined with the earnings from an endowment, Museum store sales, proceeds from the Oklaoma City Memorial Marathon and other private fundraising sustain this memorial. The most basic and the most sophisticated of operations are paid for by the people who come here and visit. We are also fortunate to have an incredible group of partners who understand our mission and our desire to educate about the senselssness of violence that help us meet our annual goal.

This amazing 3.3 acre site and 50,000 Museum are here because the people came together to tell their story, your story and your nieghbor’s story. There is something you can relate to and when you leave, we promise you will be proud of our city, our nation and our resolve.
