The Museum
A Decade of Achievements

February 19, 2011

The Oklahoma City National Memorial & Museum is dedicated to honoring those who were killed, those who survived and those changed forever. Its mission is to educate about the senselessness of violence and to teach the lessons of remembrance, respect and resilience.

If you have been to the Memorial, you have noticed the captivating Field of Empty Chairs located in the footprint of the Murrah Building. These symbolize the empty seats left at dinner tables all over the state following April 19, 1995. The chairs hold an important place in the hearts of many survivors, family and friends. In an incredible alignment of local, state and national priorities, this Museum was built less than six years after the bombing.

Today, it was incredible to see the lines of people around the building and the Museum full of family members, survivors, rescue workers and people from all across our community as we came together to celebrate the accomplishments of the past decade. Already today over 1,400 visitors have come to experience the Museum  free of charge thanks to Devon Energy.

A special thanks to Congressman James Lankford who voted in the United States House of Representatives until 4:00 a.m. this morning and flew home to help us commemorate this special event. We also thank the students of Platt College Pastry Arts Program who made an incredible tribute to the Museum and more than 1,000 cupcakes, and to Borden Dairy ice cream that visitors enjoyed as they heard the Museum Builders tell their story in a special First Person program.
