Preserving History...
Museum Artifacts Tell a Story

March 07, 2011

The Memorial Archives is the repository of artifacts and documentary materials related to the April 19th bombing of the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building and its aftermath. One of the Memorial’s important documentary collections records the McVeigh and Nichols’ federal court trial is the courtroom drawings of Oklahoma artist Pat Lopez.

It is through the eyes of network courtroom artists that the public is witness to these historic trials and hearings. It is the artist’s job to capture telling moments such as when people show emotion, or when witnesses recount a critical detail or reenact an event. The top image is of one of the early hearings in 1995 before the change of venue to Denver, Colorado. The bottom image is a view of Judge Richard Matsch’s Denver courtroom during McVeigh’s trial and the image in the middle depicts Oklahoma Highway Patrolman Charlie Hanger’s testimony of his arrest of Timothy McVeigh in the McVeigh federal trial.

Pat Lopez has drawn for the past 27 years and continues to draw for NBC, ABC, CNN and CBS. Each image represents about 8-13 seconds of the story. “I try to pack in as much detail I can in every drawing, showing great detail,” Pat Lopez said. “That is the only way people at home can get a glimpse of these high profile cases.”
