Preserving History...
Museum Artifacts Tell a Story

March 14, 2011

An incredible mass of cards, letters, crafts, memorabilia, songs, and poems poured into Oklahoma City in response to the bombing. The Mayor's office devoted the 4th floor of City Hall to processing these materials and estimated that it required 40 people each day to sort the mail.

Cards and letters were forwarded to malls, agencies, schools, hospitals and any other place deemed viable to share these messages with Oklahoma City. Most materials were simply addressed to Oklahoma and Oklahoma City. The Postal Service divided the undesignated deliveries between the Governor's Office at the Capitol and the Mayor's Office at City Hall, with the larger share going to the City Hall.

Stuffed toys, dolls, most quilts, book of poetry, inspiration and counseling, and commemorative items were distributed to family members and survivors. What remained in storage at City Hall and the Capitol was eventually transferred to Archives and Special Collections at the Oklahoma City National Memorial & Museum. These images represent only a few of the thousand of cards and letters preserved at the Museum for future generations.
