2012 INTERNATIONAL REFLECTIONS OF HOPE AWARD
TO POSTHUMOUSLY HONOR ANTHONY SHADID
Shadid's widow Nada Bakri and children will accept the award on his behalf at a luncheon scheduled for Thursday, May 10th at noon.
OKLAHOMA CITY, March 16, 2012 – The Oklahoma City National Memorial & Museum is honored to announce that the 2012 Reflections of Hope Award will be bestowed posthumously to two-time Pulitzer Prize journalist Anthony Shadid. This award is being given for his life's work as a foreign correspondent, his understanding of the Middle East and his role in giving people impacted by terrorism and violence a voice through his story telling.
Shadid's widow Nada Bakri and children will accept the award on his behalf at a luncheon scheduled for Thursday, May 10th at noon. The event will be held in the Sam Noble Special Event Center at the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum.
"Anthony had the unique ability to give a voice to those we would have never known if not for his writings. He gave us an understanding of what it was like to live daily with the horror of violence in their lives and he put a human touch to each story," said Kari Watkins, Executive Director, Oklahoma City National Memorial & Museum. "Sadly, our Selection Committee had discussed him as an honoree the day before his death."
Hailed as one of the best journalists of his generation, Shadid died recently in Syria while covering the crisis there. He has lectured at the Memorial and Museum on numerous occasions sharing his insights on domestic terrorism both at home and abroad.
