***MEDIA ADVISORY***
12th Oklahoma City Memorial Marathon Will Be Held this Sunday
More than 25,000 runners expected to hit the streets
Marathon honors those lost in the 1995 bombing and benefits the
Oklahoma City National Memorial & Museum
WHAT
The Oklahoma City Memorial Marathon was a simple idea conceptualized 12 years ago by two Oklahoma businessmen while running through downtown Oklahoma City. From its inaugural race in 2001 with just shy of 5,000 participants, now the 2012 event will host more 25,000 runners and walkers. The mission of the Oklahoma City Memorial Marathon is to celebrate life, reach for the future, honor the memories of those who were killed and unite the world in hope.
The Oklahoma City National Memorial Foundation is the sole beneficiary of Oklahoma City Memorial Marathon event proceeds. The Oklahoma City Memorial Marathon has contributed $3 million dollars to the Memorial since its inception. It is the largest fundraiser the Memorial has each year and is critical to the upkeep and maintenance since the Memorial & Museum receive no annual appropriations from the city, state or federal governments.
