First Person with Justic Steven Taylor

“Everyone is entitled to a fair trial, even Terry Lynn Nichols,” said Justice Steven Taylor, in a First Person program for middle school students from Agra. Taylor, who presided over the state trial of Terry Nichols in McAlester, shared his experience with the students and answered questions about the verdict, the sentence and evidence presented by both the prosecution and the defense. Taylor told students that when he sentenced Nichols to life without the possibility of parole for his role in the Oklahoma City bombing, he told Nichols he wished he could order the walls of his prison cell to be wallpapered with the faces of those who were killed. “It is ironic that the government you so hated afforded you the right to a fair trial,” Taylor said to Nichols at sentencing. Students visited the Memorial & Museum in conjunction with a study of civil rights.
