A Day of Understanding
NBC NIGHTLY NEWS ANCHOR AND PULITZER PRIZE WINNER TO LEAD DISCUSSION REGARDING IMPACT OF TERRORISM
(Oklahoma City, OK) – NBC Nightly News Anchor and Managing Editor Brian Williams will keynote a national media symposium regarding “The Impact of Terrorism Over the Past Ten Years,” on Monday evening, April 18 at the Oklahoma City National Memorial. Pulitzer Prize winner and Oklahoma native Anthony Shadid will be one of several national media taking part in the symposium, along with others who reported on the bombing in 1995.
Williams joined NBC News in 1993, becoming one of the most accomplished reporters and anchors in the business. He has over 20 years of broadcasting experience, and has reported from over 20 different nations on stories of national and international interest. In 2004, he took over the nightly anchor spot from Tom Brokaw.
The Memorial is holding several events the week of the 10th anniversary of the bombing. Monday, April 18 has been deemed “A Day of Understanding,” featuring the national media symposium. A reception with Williams and Shadid will be held at 6:00 p.m., followed by the symposium at 7:00 in the Bank One lobby, which is free and open to the public.
Shadid is the Islamic affairs correspondent for the Washington Post, winning a Pulitzer Prize in 2004 for international reporting. Based in the Middle East, Shadid was recognized for his “extraordinary ability to capture, at personal peril, the voices and emotions of Iraqis as their country was invaded, their leader toppled and their way of life upended.”
A native of Oklahoma City, Shadid speaks and reads Arabic, which has enabled him to render insights foreign to most western journalists covering the Middle East. He will keynote a luncheon that will also feature local journalists Linda Cavanaugh, Kelly Ogle, Sue Hale, Terri Watkins, David Page and Jerry Bohnen.
Reservations are required for the event, which is sponsored by the Ethics and Excellence in Journalism Foundation. Lunch tickets are $15.
