NBC Nightly News Anchor and Pulitzer Prize Winner Lead Discussion
(Oklahoma City, OK) – NBC Nightly News Anchor and Managing Editor Brian Williams will keynote a national media symposium regarding “The Impact of Terrorism Over the Past Ten Years,” Monday evening, April 18 at the Oklahoma City National Memorial. Pulitzer Prize winner and Oklahoma native Anthony Shadid will be one of several national media taking part in the symposium, along with others who reported on the bombing in 1995.
The Memorial is holding several events the week of the 10th anniversary of the bombing. Monday, April 18, “A Day of Understanding,” will feature the national media symposium. A reception will be held at 6:00 p.m., followed by the symposium at 7:00, which is free and open to the public.
While the bombing made national and worldwide news, it also was the lead story of local newscasts for months after the initial attack. As a result, the Memorial will also have a panel of journalists representing the major news outlets in Oklahoma City. The panel will include Linda Cavanaugh, Terri Watkins, Kelly Ogle, Sue Hale, David Page and Jerry Bohnen. Shadid, who reported extensively on the impact of terrorism, will keynote the luncheon from 11:30-1:00 p.m. at the Petroleum Club.
Williams joined NBC News in 1993, becoming one of the most accomplished reporters and anchors in the business. In 2004, he took over the nightly anchor spot from Tom Brokaw.
Shadid is the Islamic affairs correspondent for the Washington Post, winning the Pulitzer Prize for international reporting in 2004. Shadid was recognized for his “extraordinary ability to capture, at personal peril, the voices and emotions of Iraqis as their country was invaded, their leader toppled and their way of life upended.” A native of Oklahoma City, Shadid speaks and reads Arabic, which has enabled him to render insights foreign to most western journalists covering the Middle East.
Reservations are required for both events, which are presented by the Ethics and Excellence in Journalism Foundation. Luncheon tickets are $15.
In addition, admission to the Memorial will be complimentary on April 18 and 19 and is sponsored by Cox Communications-Oklahoma. For more information call 405.235.3313.
