Marathon Registrations on Record Pace
OKLAHOMA CITY – The director of the Oklahoma City Memorial Marathon says advance registrations for the April 24, 2005 are on pace to shatter last year’s record turnout of participants.
“Registrations are through the roof this year, as opposed to this same time in 2004,” said Marathon director Chet Collier. “The truth is, we keep waiting for our pre-registrations figures to level off, but it hasn’t happened yet.
“At this point, we are outpacing our past marathons in all categories, including the full marathon, half-marathon, five-person relay teams, Kids Marathoners and 5K Memorial Walkers.”
“The reception this event has received in Oklahoma and across the nation is gratifying,” he continued.
Compared to the first week of March, 2004, Marathon registrations are up 32%; Half-marathon (compared to the two-person relay, which has been discontinued) is up 190%; Five-person Relay is up 28; and the Kids Marathon has increased 80%. The 5-Kilometer walk is holding even with last year.
Overall, Marathon registration is up 56% from this point one year ago.
“I think we can attribute these figures to the best volunteer organization you will find at any running event in the country,” Collier continued. “That, plus the very worthy cause that our event represents – honoring the lives of those lost ten years ago at the Murrah Federal Building – has made our event known nationally as the RUN TO REMEMBER,” he concluded.
