STATE SUPERINTENDENT SANDY GARRETT ASKS SCHOOLS TO OBSERVE
MOMENT OF SILENCE AT 9:02 A.M., APRIL 19
OKLAHOMA CITY - State Superintendent Sandy Garrett said she is asking all Oklahoma public schools to observe a moment of silence at 9:02 a.m., Monday, April 19, to remember those who were lost in the heinous bombing of the Alfred P. Murrah federal building in Oklahoma City in 1995.
With 2010 marking the 15th anniversary of the tragedy, Garrett said it is important that students never forget the events of the bombing and how they forever changed this state, as well as the nation. Students in school today either were very young at the time of the bombing or were not yet born.
"A moment of silence is an opportunity for us to thoughtfully and respectfully remember those who were taken from us all too soon at 9:02 a.m., April 19, 1995, and how we Oklahomans - how all Americans - were changed as a result," Garrett said. "It is important that we never forget, and that we and future generations continue to learn and grow from what this tragedy taught us."
She added that while some school districts are in the midst of state testing, she hoped they would accommodate their schedules at the start of the day to allow for the moment of silence.
Moreover, while the Oklahoma City bombing has been in all of Oklahoma's state history textbooks since 2005, Garrett said she also hoped that a recent update by the State Board of Education in curriculum standards not only for Oklahoma history, but also U.S. History and World History in regard to the bombing will result in the topic being covered more in depth by all history textbooks.
