Description This a videotaped interview with John Avera of the Oklahoma City Police Department. John carried Baylee Almon from the Murrah Building and handed her to Chris Fields just before the photograph that became so famous was taken. He discusses the number of interviews he is asked to give each year, events of 04/19/1995 before the bombing, feeling the blast, heading toward the Murrah Building, debris, seeing the smoke, learning about the daycare center, moving through debris, removing people from the building, GSA office, looking for survivors, conditions inside the building, carrying out a baby, emergency vehicles, returning to the building, debris from other rescuers on the top floors, creation of escape route inside the building, bomb scare, working at the building as long as physically possible, returning to the police station, helping a woman from Shawnee, bathing in the sink, working as a group, damage to his hands from blood and washing, lingering emotional damage (children at plays, slideshows of faces) and flashbacks/PTSD, guilt over not doing more, seeking help with coping, massiveness/unexpectedness/endlessness of the bombing, working with news teams during the recovery, helping family members of victims during the recovery.
