This tape includes interviews with Joyce Reed, News Director for KWTV, and Leroy Tatom, KWTV helicopter pilot.
Joyce Reed discusses the morning of the bombing, feeling the bomb blast, receiving a call from Jon Hansen about the explosion, turning the KWTV Tower Camera toward downtown, helicopter crew, learning about the Murrah Building, preempting normal programming and staying on the story for several days straight, physical nature of 24 hour coverage, trying to envision the reality of the damage, covering the transfer of Timothy McVeigh from Perry to Oklahoma City, covering the story and searching for John Doe #2, Producer Steve Ackerman coordinated CBS affiliates and network programs that set up shop in Oklahoma City, concern from local citizens over the welfare of KWTV employees, the effect of the bombing upon her staff, covering the trial in Denver, strength of her staff, strength of Oklahomans.
Leroy Tatom discusses his activities on the morning of April 19, 1995, feeling the blast, taking off for downtown, seeing the pillar of black smoke, seeing the damage to the Murrah Building, destruction to the area, the uncontrolled nature of the airspace around the building, the temporary flight restriction placed upon the airspace, returning later in the afternoon, weather changes, ending flight operations, hearing about the arrest in Perry, flying to Perry, following McVeigh's helicopter back to Oklahoma City, coverage of the implosion, feelings of anger. |
