| Abstract |
After the Oklahoma City bombing in 1995, the Kids' Place was launched to provide a supportive environment for grieving families. In 1982, the Dougy Center offered its first support group for grieving children in Portland, Oregon. Three staff members from the Dougy Center came to Oklahoma City in August of 1995 to provide detailed training about setting up and running a center. Danny Mize and Charlotte Burrough completed the training session and created The Kids' Place in Edmond.
The Kids' Place sent two team members to New York City on September 15, 2001, to help people deal with the emotional impact of the World Trade Center. They carried with them the experienced gained in the aftermath of the 1995 tragedy and shared this experience with leaders of grief centers in New York, Washington, D.C., Maryland, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Massachusetts, Connecticut and Virginia. In November, 2001, four leaders from New York City visited The Kids' Place in Edmond in preparation for the establishment of a children's grief program and camp at Schneider Children's Hospital in New York City.
Gary Woodbridge lost his wife, Ronota Woodbridge, in the Oklahoma City bombing. Gary works as a volunteer group leader at The Kids' Place and was a member of the Oklahoma team that helped the grieving families in New York City.
Although launched as an independent not-for-profit, as of 2006 The Kids' Place is administered by the Edmond Church of Christ.
